Bad things happen on Holidays

I have a really hard time with holidays.
It always seemed that the most horrible things always happen during or around them.
As my father got older, all sorts of crazy things always happened around holidays.
I'm not sure on exact years and dates, but I'll start with the year that I got a call on my birthday. My dad had fallen down the basement stairs. My mom needed me to go there. It must have been around my 28th birthday.
One year on Thanksgiving, Ian and I went to visit my dad in the nursing home. Now, I will say, that nursing home was awful! My mom had been staying at another nursing home recovering from back surgery. My father started found out that she had gone back to their apartment. He started demanding to take him home, or he would kill himself. We ended up following my dad in an ambulance to the hospital in Lebanon where he would be on suicide watch. In a couple weeks, they released him to go home with mom. Then, Ian and I went to visit on Christmas, and dad was on the floor. He had been on the floor for over six hours! He wouldn't let my mom dial 911 or call for help! I pushed the alert button and got help there. He ended up in the hospital for Christmas.
After that, he was put in a fairly nice nursing home in Mulberry. It was kind of far from mom though. I went to visit one Saturday, because I just happened to be in that area. He again started demanding to be moved closer to mom THAT DAY or he would kill himself! I explained that he couldn't be moved until Monday, because it was Saturday. He threw a fit and kept saying he would kill himself!
We got him moved on Monday.
One Thanksgiving weekend, my dad was in the hospital. He oxygen levels were drastically low. Hope, Ian, and I went to the cafeteria to talk whether or not to just make him comfortable. We go back to his room, and he's sitting up talking to the nurses! That hour discussion, and he completely turned around!
At this time, the holidays are just reminders of how I can't have children. It makes me sad. Every one around me right now is pregnant or has just had a baby.

These are just a few examples.
Ian knows I have a really hard time with holidays. I've talked him into Disney World for one Thanksgiving. It was probably the best Thanksgiving I've had in a long time!
I do love my family, but I'm over bad happenings with bad timing. I'd rather be at Disney World.

The Statement

People don't understand why women have such a hard time with self esteem. A while back, my husband and I went out with a friend of ours. We were deep in conversation about another friend, and what she was doing in her life. That's when it happened. The friend turned to me and said, "Well, you're not that attractive, and you do pretty well for yourself!"
I've been a little broken ever since that moment.
I try to be extremely positive all the time. Sometimes it's real positivity, and sometimes it's just a facade.
In my mind at that time, I tried to justify the statement with, oh, I know what he means. I have a job. I have a boyfriend who loves me. (This was pre-marriage.) I have friends. I have all of these positive things in my life. But lately, the statement he made almost two years ago, has been extremely damaging.
I've done things to try to improve myself with diet and exercise and trying to dress properly, but that really doesn't change my looks. My parents didn't believe in braces when I was a child, so, my teeth are crooked, and I'm extremely obese.
Maybe I should start looking into getting braces and an adult, but we just don't have the money right now.
Part of me just can't believe that something that was said almost two years ago is bothering my psyche so much now. I've never let anything get to me like this before, but this was coming from someone who is supposed to be my friend. My husband was there, but he didn't correct him. Maybe my husband didn't realize how awful the statement was at that time.
It's really hard to look at our examples of what looks feminine in media, because I'm not it.
Hearing, "Oh, but you're beautiful inside!" doesn't fix the situation either.
Why this person thought it was ok to say this, I have no idea.
Body image is such a part of our sense of self whether or not it's good.

Mental Misconceptions: A House

When I was little, I didn't understand what a house was.  I know this sounds very strange.  My family lived in a trailer until I was 11 years old.  It was pretty small.  I thought we had this tiny mobile home because we were poor.  That may have been part of the truth, but not all of it. When I visited other peoples houses, they all seemed to be these grandiose mansions to me.  Maybe I had really rich friends.  I'm not sure.  But I never understood that, most homes average around 2,000 square feet or smaller. (This could also be a misconception as an adult.) Or maybe as an adult, the average home is getting smaller.
As a teenager, it started to sink in a little bit.  My friend's mom started to look for a little home to move in to.  She would take my friend and me with her when she toured these houses.  They all seemed extremely small to me!  The idea that someone would by a home so small was a little baffling!  The thing was, it was just my friend and her mom.  They didn't need a gigantic home.  They just needed a enough space for the two of them.
What does this all mean now?
I'm currently an apartment dweller.  I'm O.K. with that!  I do have a thing with space. I like having a lot of living space.
I do want to get a house eventually, but I'm in no hurry.  Getting out of debt first is more important.
I've learned that I need to decide what I think is most important in a home, and make choices based on that.  For me, that would be an amazing kitchen! I do want space in other rooms, but a kitchen that has space, whether that's counter space or cabinet and storage space will be the important things to me.
I've had to tell myself, a house for two or three people with cats is not going to be gigantic. In fact, it's probably going to be on the small side.

What's wrong with Socialism?

Seriously? And I mean this in the most innocent way possible.
Do you attend a church?  I do.  And this was the story told with a talk a couple weeks ago:
A city in Mexico (or South America somewhere) had a drought, but most of them were prepared with extra provisions from the year before.  All except one family.  For some reason, this family was not prepared.  So, what happened?  The church family, or church members provided for that family, making sure that they had enough to eat to make it through the coming months.
Isn't this Socialism?  Isn't this what most churches teach?  The church family will provide.  That body of people will make sure that the family without provisions is able to survive in a time in need.
If you are a believer and attend church on a regular basis, do you believe in Socialism?  Why or why not?
You can say, "Well, they were full tithe payers, so, they deserve the help!"  But that isn't always true.  I know a lot of churches out there that help anyone, member or not, tithe payers or not.
I'm starting to lean to a Socialist society.  I know people abuse the system. A LOT OF PEOPLE.  But I mean the people that aren't.  The ones that need insurance.  The ones that need food and clothing.
I know the difference. After a stint of working at Walmart in college, I could tell the difference between a family that was really trying to get by, and the Hautian (a person from Terre Haute, IN) screaming at me, because the beer and cigarettes were not covered by the state debit card.
There are also people that don't only abuse the system, but abuse church programs that help families out.  I knew a family when I was in elementary school, that had the children join the LDS church.  That way, they could receive food from the Bishop's Storehouse to help them out.  That arrangement didn't last long, but it happened. I'm sure it's not the first or last time either.
If you're a believer or a Christian, are you for or against socialism and why?
